RESUMO

An interesting evolutionary question that still remains open is the connectivity between marine populations. Marine currents can favour the dispersal of larvae or adults, but they can also produce eddies and gyres generating oceanographic fronts, thus limiting gene flow. To address this subject, we selected the Atlantic-Mediterranean transition, where several fronts are located: Gibraltar Strait (GS), Almeria-Oran Front (AOF) and Ibiza Channel (IC). Seven populations of the marine crab Liocarcinus depurator (Cadiz, West and East Alboran, Alacant, Valencia, Ebro Delta and North Catalonia) located along this transition were analysed in six consecutive years (2014-2019) using a fragment of the COI (Cytochrome Oxidase subunit I) gene. All sequences (966) belonged to two well defined haplogroups: ATL (most abundant in Atlantic waters) and MED (predominant in Mediterranean waters). Following a geographic variation, the frequency of ATL decreased significantly from Cadiz to North Catalonia. However, this variation presented steps due to the effect of oceanographic restrictions/fronts. Significant effects were recorded for GS (2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019), AOF (all years except 2018) and IC (2016). The intensity and precise location of these fronts changed over time. Multivariate analyses distinguished three main population groups: Cadiz, Alboran Sea and the remaining Mediterranean populations. These findings could be relevant to properly define Marine Protected Areas and for conservation and fisheries policies.

The role of two different layouts of school furniture was investigated in the pattern legibility and spatial-temporal parameters of a graphic skill acquisition. Thirty children from the first grade of elementary school (mean age = 6 years) practiced a graphic task according to a criterion figure. They were assigned to two groups, Group of Fixed School Desk (GF) and Group with Adjustable School Desk (GA). Each child practiced the task on a digital tablet for 25 trials. The software Movalyser 2.3 processed the data from which the following measures were obtained: pattern legibility, linear spatial error and speed of execution. Two expert teachers also judged legibility. Children in the GA showed more number of legible patterns, they were slower to complete the task but they were more accurate in its reproduction. The adjustable school desk facilitates the acquisition of legible graphic patterns. Since stable graphic skills are positively correlated to the production of creative texts, studies unraveling the role of school desks to facilitate handwriting and drawing skills will contribute ultimately children's literacy and overall educational development.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of daptomycin in the treatment of hip and knee periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs). METHODS: We completed a retrospective review of all patients in our institution (n=20) who were treated with daptomycin for hip or knee PJI, over the 36 month period from January 2008 until December 2010. RESULTS: Infection types included eight cases with acute infections, nine cases of chronic infection and three cases of positive intraoperative cultures. Methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus was the most frequent microorganism found in surgical cultures (40%). Our patients, on average, received daptomycin as salvage therapy at a dose of 6.6 mg/kg/day for 44.9 days. The overall success rate was 78.6% after a median follow-up period of 20 months. In the subgroup of patients with acute PJIs, treatment with daptomycin, debridement and implant retention was successful in all cases. We found two cases of severe side effects (one case of acute renal failure due to massive rhabdomyolysis and one of eosinophilic pneumonia) and two cases of asymptomatic transient creatine phosphokinase (CPK) level elevation. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of high daptomycin doses with an adequate surgical approach could be a viable alternative in cases of difficult-to-treat Gram-positive PJIs. Due to the risk of potentially serious adverse events, serum CPK level should be closely monitored.
